Tropical Palms or the proper name – Neanthe Bella Palms – are a typical favorite within the HortyGirl product line. With its lush green leaves, simple yet beautiful plant makes a fantastic addition to any household, office, or space.

Finding the right light conditions for your tropical palm

These palms can survive in low light conditions, but do prefer to be near the medium indirect sunlight.  Be careful though, as they are very sensitive to bright direct sunlight, and will cause the leaves to brown.

Watering your Palm Plant

To water a Neanthe Bella Palm, the soil should be moist between each watering period.  Water every 1 to 2 weeks in the Spring and Summer months, and then space out your watering in the Fall and Winter months.  Grab a 1/4 of a cup of water, and pour slowly at the base of the plant.  Pour slowly to ensure you don’t overwater.  Sometimes the soil may need less than 1/4 of a cup.  The water shouldn’t “pooled” at the bottom of the glass and should soak up reasonably quickly. Signs of overwatering? The leaves will turn yellow or brown, and it might develop root rot.

A FOOLPROOF WAY TO WATER YOUR NEANTHE BELLA PALM PLANT – Use a wood or bamboo skewer (kitchenware) and insert into the base of the plant and pull out the stake.  Feel/Notice if it feels wet, moist or dry and water accordingly.  In this case, if the skewer comes out dry – its time to water.  If it comes out wet, you should check back in a few days.

I have also read that palms like to be kept in humid conditions.  Misting them with water every couple days can simulate these conditions.

What about pests?

Inserts can be a problem with palms as we might not pay close attention to our easy to grow plants.  Palms can get mealy bugs, red spider mites or even scale.  If this does happen and you notice them on the leaves, spray the plant twice a day with a soapy  mixture for about 2 weeks and it should disappear. If it doesn’t, it is best to seek out a stronger solution from your local nursery.
