In our fun facts blog, you learned about your HortyGirl indoor Air Plant and got some creative living decor ideas for your plant. Now it’s time to learn how to take care of your Air Plant to keep it thriving all year long in your home or office decor.

Whether you received your Air Plant as a gift from a loved one or bought it for yourself, it is important to know how to care for your plant. Air Plants get water and nutrients from the air and do not need soil to grow. They are easy to care for, but require a different kind of care than other indoor potted plants.

We asked our HortyGirl potted plant expert and rounded up some top care tips for Air Plants. Keep reading to learn more.

Air Plant Lighting Care Tips

Air Plants need bright indirect light to thrive. Try to avoid placing your Air Plant in direct sunlight as their fine leaves may burn and dry out. If you want to place your Air Plant on a windowsill, make sure it receives filtered light or gentle morning sun only.

On the other hand, Air Plants will not do well in low light. It is best to place your Air Plants in a bright room or area with indirect sunlight.

Air Plant Watering Care Tips

Depending on the climate, it is a good idea to adjust your watering methods. We recommend watering your Air Plant about once a week by placing them in a sink, bowl or small jar with enough water to completely submerge your air plant. Soak the air plant in the water for 30-60 minutes.

If you are in a drier climate, give them a longer soak for about an hour or more every other week. Keep an eye on your air plant and if it is struggling, try soaking for several hours or overnight to see if you can re-hydrate your plant.

After soaking your Air Plant, give them a gentle shake and place them upside down on a towel or a rack to let them drain and dry out. Once the plant is completely dry usually within 4 to 5 hours, place them back in their container.

In between waterings, you can also mist your Air Plant to keep them fresh and healthy especially if you live in a drier climate or during the winter when humidity is lower in homes. Spray from all angles fully wetting all sides and parts of the plants. Misting is not a substitute for soaking. Soaking is a must for your Air Plant.

SIGNS OF UNDER OR OVER WATERING YOUR AIR PLANT

If over watering occurs or if the plant did not dry out completely, the body of your Air Plant will turn soft and become rotten and discoloured. The leaves may also start to come off from the center of the plant. If you under water your Air Plant, the leaves may turn brittle, curl and get brown dry tips.

Air Plant Temperature Care Tips

Warm temperatures are best for Air Plants. The ideal temperature range for Air Plants is 55 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 to 30 degrees Celsius. Temperatures under 45 degrees Fahrenheit or 7 degrees Celsius, will cause Air Plants to freeze and not survive.

Finishing Up

Air plants are easy to care for, and also adds a unique touch of beauty to the home or office decor making them the perfect gift for yourself, friend or family member.

Fun Facts About Air Plants

ORIGINS OF THE AIR PLANT

Part of the Tillandsia family, Air Plants have more than 500 varieties around the world, and are native to tropical areas such as the West Indies, Mexico and much of Central America and South America. Surprisingly, the closest and most famous relative to Air Plants is a pineapple.

INTERESTING FEATURES OF THE AIR PLANTS

Air plants live without soil and are free from the constraints of roots. An air plant is known as an epiphyte, which means they attach themselves to things such as rocks, trees and structures indoors or outdoors, but do not feed off those things for survival. Air Plants actually have little hairs or scales on their leaves called Trichomes, that act as little reservoirs and absorb water and nutrients from the air.

Air plants usually have slender triangle-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette pattern with new growth appearing from the centre. Most Air Plant species can bloom turning red and producing yellow-purple tubular or funnel shaped flowers during their blooming cycle in spring and summer time. After Air Plants flower, they can produce pups, a little offset that can be removed and placed in another container as a new air plant or left with its parent to create a little cluster.

Stylish Living Decor Ideas for Air Plants

Since Air Plants do not need soil to grow, they are quite versatile and can be displayed in many stylish and fun creative ways. Air plants look great by themselves on a bookshelf, on a desk in your office, on a living room side table or even suspended from the ceiling or window frame in a glass globe.

Air Plants also look good with several varieties displayed together in a group. To create a group display, you can even recycle and repurpose old glass drinkware by placing air plants in them and grouping them along a window sill that offers bright indirect light but not direct sunlight. You could also create an air plant grouping display in a shelf cubby in the brightest room in your house and on a wall directly across from a south-facing sliding glass door.

Air Plants can also be placed in glass terrariums or globes in a beach theme with some sand and shells, and perhaps even add a flamingo to the air plant globe for a fun tropical flair. Another way to display Air Plants is to make a wreath with various air plants and evergreen branches and hang it on your wall in the office or in the living room adding a unique touch of nature to your wall decor.
